She suffered burns over 85 percent of her body when a burning car crashed into her childcare centre in Sydney, leaving her with the loss of both feet, some fingers and her right ear.

A few years later, at the age of five, Sophie experienced a second car accident. While being pushed across a pedestrian crossing by her nanny near their Northern Beaches home in 2006, she was struck by a car. This devastating incident propelled her 18 metres from her wheelchair and resulted in a heart attack. Additionally, she sustained severe injuries, including a broken jaw, broken collarbone, nine broken ribs, punctured lungs, two fractured vertebrae and a brain injury.

Now, 17 years later, Sophie is preparing to marry her childhood sweetheart, Joseph Salerno. Their engagement was announced earlier this year in an exclusive interview with Australian Women's Weekly. The couple had been close friends since high school, and their transition from friendship to romance began after Sophie returned to Sydney from studying at a London university in 2020.

Joseph proposed to Sophie in their apartment with a scrapbook that chronicled their journey together. The final page of the scrapbook featured a photo of an engagement ring, and Joseph, dropping to one knee, asked, "Would you be my baby?" To which, Sophie happily ticked the "Yes" box on the back of the scrapbook.

The couple is set to tie the knot next October in the picturesque Hunter Valley, marking a beautiful chapter in Sophie Delezio's extraordinary life journey.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Australian Women’s Weekly (@womensweeklymag)

Images: Instagram

Former Home and Away star Sophie Dillman - who played Ziggy on the soap for six years - has opened up about her ongoing fight with endometriosis, and her experience with the condition on holiday.

Sophie had been travelling through Europe with her partner-in-life-and-screen Patrick O’Connor after the pair had parted ways with Home and Away, and while the once-in-a-lifetime trip had been a positive experience for the most part, Sophie’s endometriosis chose to rear its painful head while the couple were in Greece.

In a column penned for Yahoo Lifestyle, Sophie shared that while she dreamed of having the time of their lives there, she was also on her period, and was in such pain that she couldn’t want - or even eat - properly, and her new holiday clothes were out of the question as her stomach was “so swollen”.

She went on to explain that she suffers from endometriosis, “a disease that affects 1 in 9 women and people assigned female at birth. It is a condition where tissue, similar to the lining of your uterus, grows outside the uterus causing pain and/or infertility.”

As she put it, the condition is “f***ing awful”, and has impacted all areas of her life: “physically, mentally, emotionally, my relationships, work and NOW IT HAS COME FOR ME ON HOLIDAY.”

Sophie’s symptoms tend to occur during her period and ovulation, and range from dull and sharp pains - through her abdomen, lower back, and legs - to nausea, fatigue, and swelling in her torso.

And while Sophie had been nursing her pain and waiting for relief to kick in, she’d taken the opportunity to consider “some tips to make the most of the situation”, for while there was no solution to the problem, there was always the benefit of some advice for her fellow fighters.

Sophie’s first tip was to travel prepared with the likes of “painkillers, pads, and birth control supplies” as irregular periods and bad luck can make for a terrible combination.

She also suggested travelling with “loose flowy clothing”, to ensure an outfit that always fits. Additionally, she recommended taking a pillow along “to restaurants or on trips” to avoid a flare-up from sitting on hard surfaces.

“Don’t overdo it” came next, as rest is crucial when battling endometriosis symptoms.

“I understand the temptation to do 20,000 steps a day and soak up every second of the place,” she confessed, “but either you slow yourself down or the pain will stop you instead.”

And last but certainly not least, Sophie encouraged others not to be too hard on themselves.

“You can’t control everything and punishing yourself will only make things worse,” she said. “Listen to your body.”

Images: Instagram

Man served with AVO after turning up on Sophie Monk’s doorstep

A man has been served with an AVO after he turned up at Sophie Monk’s home clutching a single red rose; claiming he was the victim of an elaborate catfishing scam that robbed him of $7,000.

Brian Rapley said police questioned him “like I was some crazed stalker” but insisted that he had months of messages on his phone between him and the person he had believed to be Monk.

“I feel like such an idiot,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “But I thought we were in a relationship."

Police were called on April 25 to Monk’s NSW Central Coast home after a man was spotted outside at 7:30am calling her name. He returned later that evening and was swarmed by police.

Rapley, 49, said five police cars descended on him.

"They said to me, ‘What are you here to do to Sophie Monk?’ and I said, ‘I’m here to meet her for the first time, we are in a relationship'."

Monk wasn’t home at the time as she was with her husband Joshua Gross in Queensland filming a movie Zombie Plane with US entertainer Vanilla Ice.

“I do not know any person by the name of Brian Rapley. I am not in a relationship with anyone by the name of Brian Rapley. I am currently happily married to my husband Joshua Gross,” Monk said in a statement to police.

Rapley wasn’t officially charged but was served with an AVO and told not to approach the TV personality.
He had told police that he genuinely believed it was Monk he was communicating with after he left a message on her verified Instagram account.

“Then next thing I get a message from another account but with the same profile pic as Sophie, saying, ‘Hey, it's Sophie … let’s chat here, my manager reads my official account, so this is better,’” he told the Daily Telegraph.

Over the span of four months, he said he and the person he believed to be Monk spoke regularly.

Rapley showed the outlet the multiple messages he claimed he thought were from the star.

One of the messages to him read, “I love you”.

However, there were telling signs that it was likely a scam as the “relationship” never moved from messaging to phone calls.

“I did think that was weird. I was like ‘If you are who you say you are, you could walk into a shop and get a new phone for free’”.

However, the account explained that their phone was broken and they were too busy to buy a new one.

Rapley then said he fell for a scam in which the person he thought was Monk said she was “getting all this money” but asked him to send her cash in the meantime.

When he questioned why he would be sending money to such a high-profile celeb, he was told it was just “bank account drama”.

He then revealed that the person he was messaging provided him with Monk’s address and told him to meet her there on April 25 so they could finally meet face-to-face.

Rapley said he was embarrassed.

“Look, I know it sounds stupid … I look like a right fool but the truth is I’m just lonely, and I believed her.”

Today shakes things up for the weekend

The Nine Network has revealed that Jayne Azzopardi and Clint Stanaway will be joining the dedicated team of Weekend Today, alongside news presenter Sophie Walsh.

And in celebration of their new gig, the two spoke to 9Entertainment, with Stanaway sharing the team’s excitement and desire to bring a fresh experience to the show, keeping viewers entertained and informed along the way.

"We're good listeners,” he explained, “and I'm really excited to sort of showcase people's stories. There's no doubt, I think both of us, and including Sophie, we want to bring a relaxed sort of vibe to the show and have some fun, but as well as keeping people entertained, we know we have a responsibility to keep people informed as well."

And as Azzopardi added, “during the week, everybody's so rushed, trying to get the kids off to school and get out the door to work. On the weekend everything happens at a little bit of a slower pace.

"So you can have us on the TV while you're eating breakfast and having your coffee and there'll be interesting conversations, and also maybe helping you make sense of things that have happened during the week that you've heard about, but you haven't really had a chance to read a lot about it because it's too busy."

Azzopardi went on to note that working with Clint has “just been so easy”, and that they know they have each other’s support, as well as being able to “trust each other to be able to do our jobs properly, and all actually really, really like each other.”

"I'm a sports veteran, Jayne's all about politics, and I love Sophie's cheek and humour,” Stanaway noted of their team dynamic.

"And we're all from different parts of the country. I'm unashamedly a Melbourne guy, Jayne's from the Sydney shire, and Sophie's a Queenslander at heart, and I love that about us. And I think that's really showcased on our show.”

He added that they had also known each other for “a long time as colleagues”.

The difference in their career history - Stanaway reporting on sports, Jayne covering finance and politics - is likely to be the backbone of their success for the breakfast TV programme, with its variety in coverage across the realms of news and current affairs, weather, politics, lifestyle, and entertainment. And as Stanaway put it, “Jayne's the sensible one. She started out in finance. Right there is the contrast between us.”

But they won’t be the only ones contributing to their broadcasts, with Azzopardi making sure to recognise everyone behind the scenes too, noting that “we've got fantastic producers and they work so hard and keep us on our toes. They pull us up if we're talking for a bit too long and keep things running to time."

Stanaway then took the opportunity to point out, “because when we get started we can be hard to shut up!"

Images: Today / Nine

“I do eat the poo chute”: Sophie Monk’s shrimpy confession

When Sophie Monk, host of Love Island Australia and a regular on The Hundred with Andy Lee, stopped by for a chat on National Prawn Day, it should have been safe to assume that the conversation wouldn’t steer to a prawn’s digestive tract.

And yet - somehow for Today show hosts Karl and Sarah, that’s exactly how things went.

“From the glitz and glamour of the red carpet to the Sydney Fish Market,” came Sophie’s introduction, before Karl exclaimed, “an ambassador for prawns!”

“I’m the face of prawns,” Sophie confirmed. “I don’t think I look like a prawn - I mean, I’m dressed a bit like a prawn - but, yeah, I’m the face of prawns. I get asked to do a lot of endorsements.”

Karl, wanting to get to the bottom of Sophie’s surprising career move, asked, “why did you choose this?”

“Because prawns are my thing,” Sophie told him, “they’re very Aussie, and everyone kind of eats prawns.”

From there, Sophie went on to state that vegans probably didn’t, and Sarah Abo noted that it just “means there’s more for us”.

Karl then asked about the “emotional moment” when she’d gotten the call, and Sophie was more than happy to fill him in, telling the hosts “it’s funny you ask, because I get calls for make-up brands - you name it, and I’m like ‘no, it’s not my brand’. Prawns? I went ‘that’s my brand’.

“It’s Aussie, everyone loves it.”

And it was then that Sophie revealed the truth behind her particular prawn habits, describing how she’s “really good at peeling them … but I do eat the poo chute thing.”

Sarah, without missing a beat, told her she “can’t do that, Soph!”

But Sophie wasn’t having any of it, telling the pair that she’d given it some thought, and that she’d decided it was okay, “because they just eat little bits of seaweed on the floor, so really - technically - you eat sushi, whatever.”

Her carefully considered logic wasn’t enough to sway Karl, who was quick to inform her that he would not - and could not - “do the poo chute”. With his nose scrunched, and Sophie asking why, he stated, “it’s not my thing.”

Sarah admitted that it wasn’t her thing either, while Sophie continued to try and convince them, noting “extra nutrition” and efficiency - apparently, her method is quicker.

Miraculously, that was then enough for Sarah to change her stance, with the host announcing that she was going to “try the poo thing” the next time she dug into a prawn.

“We don’t even know it’s poo,” Sophie continued anyway, to the laughter of both hosts and those hidden behind the scenes, “it comes from the brain to the tail! How do we even know? Maybe it’s just a spine.”

“It looks like poo,” was the quick-and-to-the-point response from Karl. “If it looks like it, smells like it, it’s poo.”

And, as it turns out, Karl was right. The “poo chute”, or black line, is actually the prawn’s digestive tract.

But for those who think Sophie’s on to something, there’s no need to fear - the chute can be eaten, and some professional chefs even think that it has the added benefit of improving the taste of the prawn.

Images: Today/Nine

"Her own doing": Lisa Wilkinson slammed for parting shot

Lisa Wilkinson has once again been blasted, but this time it was over her speech she gave while quitting The Project.

It was on Sunday night’s show when she announced she was stepping down, after a tough six months.

Australian media commentator, Sophie Elsworth has accused Wilkinson of “playing the victim”, claiming that most of the attacks coming from the media were “her own doing”.

This includes delaying the trial of Brittany Higgins alleged rapist Bruce Lehrmann, due to her problematic Logies acceptance speech.

The trial was scheduled for June 27, but in the aftermath of the acceptance speech, the judge had made the decision to delay the high-profile case ruling it would be “unfair” to go on among public commentary surrounding the case.

“Lisa Wilkinson, in typical fashion, made it all about her and plays the victim,” Ms Elsworth told Sky News' Chris Kenny on Monday night.

“She made headlines back in June for that speech we know she gave at the Logies that was problematic, so that's why she predominantly made a lot of headlines.

But she took last night's exit from The Project to slam the media on the way out.”

Kenny said Wilkinson's leaving message was "bizarre", and said she appeared to be “blaming other media for her errors”.

“She's very good at playing the victim, and she did this very well last night,” Ms Elsworth added.

“All her fans say how shocking the media has treated her, but I must say a lot of it has been caused by her own doing.”

Wilkinson has been on Aussie screens for over 20 years and even signed a deal with Ten for a huge $1.7 million per year in 2018. However, her appearance on the show has done little to stop rapidly declining ratings.

Images: Sky News / The Project

Prince Edward's wife breaks down mid-interview

Prince Edward's wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, revealed that Prince Philip's death has left a "giant-sized hole" in the royal family.

She also spoke about the pandemic has "slightly skewed things", which means that the royal family haven't been able to grieve properly.

Despite the Duke of Edinburgh passing away "peacefully" at Windsor Castle on April 9th, the family aren't coping properly two months on from his death.

She spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live and said that Prince Philip's death left a "giant-sized hole in our lives".

“Well he has left a giant-sized hole in our lives," she began.

“I think the pandemic has unfortunately slightly skewed things in as much as it’s hard to spend as much time with the Queen as we would like to.

“We’ve been trying to, but of course it’s still not that easy.

“And of course the normal way of things isn’t normal yet so we’re not necessarily doing the things that we would normally have done with him.

“So I think the whole grieving process is probably likely for us to take a lot longer. It may be the same for many other families out there.

“Because if you’re not living with somebody, 24/7, the immediate loss isn’t necessarily felt in the same way, as if somebody was in the house with you all the time.”

Interviewer Naga Munchetty saw that Sophie's eyes began to fill with tears and asked her if she was okay.

Sophie responded: “It’s only when you would do the normal things that you would have done with them, and you suddenly realise that they are not there, that you really start to have an ‘oh my goodness’ moment.

“Just talking to you now, it’s a bit of an ‘oh my goodness’ moment. I think they’ll come and go. But you have to let them come and go.”

The monks walking Japan’s mountains

In the ancient forests of Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata Prefecture, Japanese mountain worshippers, called Yamabushi, have been walking the mountainous paths for 1400 years.

Though it is an enjoyable place to hike, the monks are walking in pursuit of spiritual rebirth.

Yamagato lies in the northernmost region of Japan’s Honshu island, and is an isolated, mountainous region prone to heavy snowfall.

Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan, and Mount Yudono of Dewa Sanzan - literally “the Three Mountains of Dewa Province” - have been deemed sacred since 593 A.D., when Prince Hachiko fled to Mount Haguro following the assassination of his father, Emperor Sushun. The prince was told the mountain would be where he would encounter Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, so he built shrines on each peak to keep the mountain gods there and ensure the region would experience peace and prosperity.

The mountains were established as a centre for Shugendo, a Japanese form of worship dating back to when the mountains were considered deities. Eventually Shugendo would incorporate elements of Shinto, Buddhism, and Taoism and form the religion of the Yamabushi.

“Historically, the Yamabushi lived on the higher mountains of Japan. They would years on end in the mountains,” explained Timm Bunting, a Yamabushido Project Leader and Yamabushi Master Assistant.

“For example, the Yamabushi who self-mummified to become Sokushinbutsu (Living Buddha) had to spend at least 1,000 days in the mountains,” he said.

This self-mummification process required the Yamabushi to fast for an extended period, and was outlawed more than 100 years ago.

Today, the 6000 Yamabushi still in Japan believe Shugendo’s training in the harsh environment of the mountains can bring enlightenment.

To become a certified Yamabushi, a week-long Akinome Autumn Peak Ritual must be completed. Though its exact nature is secret, the ritual is known to include meditation under a waterfall, nightwalking, and visiting places where the gods live on the mountains and praying. This immersion in the mountains is thought to help the Yamabushi become one with the mountain’s spirit and allow them re-emerge enlightened.

“In walking we are born again. We rejuvenate our life,” said Master Yoshino, a 13th-generation Yamabushi priest and head of the Haguro Yamabushi.

A growing number of people around Japan and the world have rediscovered Dewa Sanzan’s healing energy, and thousands have taken part in Yamabushi training offered in both Japanese and English.

During the one-day, two-day, or four-day course, participants can only say one word, “uketamou” (I accept), in response to instructions. Phones, watches, brushing teeth, shaving, reading, and writing are also prohibited to help participants partake in self-discovery and mindfulness.

Maiko Ito, a Yamabushido Project Leader, said: “We want people to face themselves, to look at the feet they are standing on, and to feel a connection with nature, society, and the world.”

Images: The Dewa Sanzan / Instagram
